A full-blown feeding is one of the principal conditions of a successful bird keeping. Birds that live in people's houses in ornamental cages usually belong to granivorous birds. But it doesn't intend them to eat only seeds. But in fact such birds vary their food each season in natural conditions. They can have everything including animal feed, greens, fruits and tree barks. That's why the variety of feeds will bring your bird healthy.

Today you can see a wide diversity of bird seed in different pet shops. You are to look after your birds and create natural conditions for them. That is why you have to feed them with different sorts of forage during the year.

Lots of birds can have the same meal for a long period of time and don't reveal any signs of a disease. As a result a bird can be ill with different types of diseases such as overweight, kidney illness, disorder of the reproductive function and many others. Vitamins and proteins are also necessary for the birds' body because without them different infectious diseases will occur.

The basis in a bird's meal should include grain mixture. Different kinds of crops (wheat, millet, oats, maize and others) and seeds (canary seed, herbage seeds, seeds of lettuce) must be included in this blend because it is really helpful for a bird's prosperity. Of course there should be oil-bearing seeds such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seed and various nuts. But these sorts of seeds must be attached in a small amount because overdose of oil-yielding seeds is the reason of obesity.

Your bird must have a daily norm of its ration because each species has its own daily norm. Budgerigars should have 2 teaspoons a day and in the same time macaw needs four tablespoonfuls every day.

You are to include in the forage diverse greeneries, wild herbage, fruits, vegetables, fresh leaves and branches of trees. And, of course you are to add animal feed to the bird's meal. Eggs in a boiled condition, nonfat cottage cheese or small amount of fatless minced meat may be included in a bird's ration. These feeds are given to a cage bird one time a week, in molt period - two times a week and only in the period of nestling - every day. Chalk or small stones must be also included in an extra feeder in a bird's cage. They contain calcium and necessary for good digestion of a bird.
